Note 1 | At the beginning of his career Plantin issued an impressive number of 'almanachs' of which no copies are known. They include some made by Nostradamus. |
Note 2 | In 1556 Plantin sold to Jean Steelsius, on 5 January, one 'Almanach de Nostradamus avec les présages', valued 3 stuivers (meaning that this must have been a quite substantial work, including the famous 'Prophéties', published for the first time in 1555 at Lyons by Macé Bonhomme [Brunet, IV, Columns 104-105]), on 12 January another 12 copies, worth 1 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, on 5 August 5 'Presages avec l'almanach de Nostrad.', worth 12½ stuivers, and on 12 August another 3 copies, worth 7½ stuivers (Arch. 38, folio 2). |
Note 3 | On 27 September 1557 Plantin sold to Jan Laurent, bookseller at Tournai, 12 'Almanach de Nostradamus', valued 6 stuivers, or ½ stuivers per copy (Arch. 38, folio 26). The substantial difference in prices makes it clear that this must have been another edition than the one distributed in 1556 and did not include the 'Prophéties'. |
Note 4 | The possibility cannot be ruled out that the 'Almanachs' of 1556 and 1557 were in fact printed in France and only distributed by Plantin. |
