Note 1 The Catena aurea in Quatuor Evangelia, edited by Antonius Senensis.
Note 2 Some copies have been especially arranged to be presented to Franciscus Sonnius, Bishop of Antwerp (see following no.).
Note 3 The type and initials used seem to indicate that this edition was not printed in the Plantin Press; it was perhaps realized by the same (unknown) typographer who was also responsible for the 1578-edition (see no. cp010817).
Note 4 The editor, the Portuguese Franciscan, Antonius Senensis, then residing in the Netherlands, received for his work ('pro suo labore') 50 copies, entered in Plantin's ledger on 24 May 1572 (Arch. 16, folio 52).
Note 5 Franciscus Sonnius, bishop of 's Hertogenbosch and bishop designate of Antwerp (he took possession of the see on 13 March 1570), was much interested in the project to the point of helping to finance it (and was rewarded with one or more copies especially arranged for him: see no. cp012252). On 22 February 1570 Plantin told the prelate that he had not yet been able to start with the Catena S. Thomae, and that, owing to the difficulties [in financing] the Polyglot Bible, he did not have the means to proceed with other projects without receiving aid (Corr., II, no. 211: 'Catenam S. Thomae nondum incepi, tot namque difficultatibus in Bibliis maximis prosequendis premor, ut, nisi adjutus, alia inchoare non possim'). The bishop obliged and lent 300 florins Carolus guilders to make the printing of the 'Cathena S. Thomae in 4 Evangelia a Fr. Antonio Senensi emendata' possible (to be refunded after two years) (cf. Plantin's letter to Sonnius, 25 February 1570: Corr., II, no. 215).
Note 6 The Enarrationes in Quatuor Evangelia had been published by an Antwerp competitor of Plantin, the firm Steelsius, in 1569 (a copy in KBR Royal Library of Belgium). This publication was not edited by Antonius Senensis, but, in any case, the Steelsius-firm could show a privilege granting the exclusive right to print the Enarrationes for a number of years. Consequently, the Steelsius-firm (the widow and heirs of J. Steelsius, represented by Petrus Bellerus) sent a judiciary officer to Plantin forbidding him to publish the 'scripta S. Thomae'. This Plantin tells in a letter to Arias Montanus, which, unhappily, is not dated, but is situated by M. Rooses in June 1572 (Corr., II, no. 189) - that is a long time after the Catena came from Plantin's presses. The outcome of the process is not known.
Note 7 Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Cathena D. Thome in eva[n]g[eli]a, f⁰, f[euilles] 151, [price:] flor. 2 stuivers 10), and M 164, folio 6r.
