| Note 2 | Arias Montanus acted as middleman between the Spanish physician and Plantin. In February 1586 the latter tells Arias Montanus that only now he had received the letter from his friend, dated Sevilla, 15 October 1584, together with the 'book' (manuscript) 'de Medicamentorum examine', which he will shortly print in 4⁰ at the request of the author (Corr., VII, nos. 1073 and 1074). On 15 March 1586 he affirms in another letter to Arias Montanus to have printed half of the book and that the rest will be finished soon (Ibidem, no. 1078). On 22 May 1586 he states that he forwarded 200 copies to Ludovicus Alvarez Calderus 'qui nobis satisfecit' - meaning very likely that the Spanish merchant paid Plantin for the copies, either in the name of Arias Montanus or of the author (Ibidem, no. 1103: 'Libri Simonis de Tovar exemplaria hic 200 tradidimus D. Ludovico Alvarez Caldero qui nobis satisfecit, spero et nos in eo imprimendo ipsius authoris et tuae voluntati'). These 200 copies do not seem to have arrived, nor the other 150 copies sent on 3 June 1587, nor the unspecified number of bound copies sent on 13 July 1587. In any case, in a long letter to Arias Montanus, 18 February 1588, Jan Moretus expresses his astonishment that as yet the books did not have been received by Tovar, detailing the shipments and the routes (= Rouen and Dunkirk) along which they were sent to Spain (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1349). |
| Note 3 | The long delays and the eventual loss of the precious books can explain why Tovar had another of his treatises on the subject printed not in Antwerp but in Sevilla: Hispalensium Pharmacopoliorum recognito a Simone e Tovar Hispalensi, medico, auspicata. Ex officina Andreae Pescionis et Joannis Leonis, 1587 (cf. Palau y Dulcet, 23, page 505). |
