Note 1 | Reprint of the 1569-edition, with some amendments, and with the addition of a treatise of Hunnaeus, De sacramentis ecclesiae axiomata (cf. no. 1414. |
Note 2 | According to the colophon of volume V the printing was finished on 3 June 1575 (perhaps with the exclusion of the De sacramentis ecclesiae). |
Note 3 | The new dedicatory by the same Hunnaeus, dated Louvain, 1 January 1575, gives interesting information on the genesis of the edition. In this dedicatory nothing is said about the eventual use by the 'theologi Lovanienses' of the edition of the Opera omnia in Rome, 1570-71, but very likely they must have consulted it. Anyway, this is announced explicitly on the title-page of vol. 3 (Secunda secundae pars). Cf. also Plantin's letter to A. Copus, February-March 1574 quoted below). |
Note 4 | The marginal notes by Antonius Senensis have been reprinted, but his dedicatory to Dom Antonio and foreword to the reader are omitted. Rooses, in Corr., I, pages 63 and 67, suggests that this was very likely due to the fact that the Portuguese scholar, in the struggle for the succession to the Portuguese throne, took openly the side of Dom Antonio against Philip II (and was about 1575 banished by the Spanish monarch from his states). Antonius Senensis was not pleased with this suppression and protested. The draft of Plantin's answer (in Spanish) (Corr., IV, no. 637) to the irate Dominican is to be dated between 20 June and 15 July 1575. In it the typographer is rather evasive: he has printed the Summa following the copy supplied by Hunnaeus and approved by the censor Molanus; in the beginning (= in the note on page [2] in the first part) in any case an honorary mention is made of the Portuguese scholar; any complaints about the suppression of the epistles are to be addressed directly to Hunnaeus; if the Louvain scholar agrees, Plantin will immediately print the epistles. From this letter it may be deduced that not political reasons but some jealousy (or a misunderstanding) by Hunnaeus had led to the suppression of the texts of Antonius Senensis. In fact, in the 1585-edition the two introductory pieces of Antonius Senensis are again reproduced. |
Note 5 | Another theologian had also remarks to make. Christophorus a Capite Fontium, general of the Franciscans, wrote to Plantin a letter, which has not been preserved. But Plantin's answer, 14 June 1575 (Corr., IV, no. 634), makes it clear that it has something to do with the new edition of the Summa: as printer, Plantin explains, he only reproduced the copy given to him, without having the authority to change the text; but if Hunnaeus 'et alii magistri nostri censores exemplaris' gave the permission he would gladly add the letters of the Franciscan theologian to the Summa. |
Note 6 | As early as December 1570 Plantin's stock of copies of the Summa was nearly depleted and he was already thinking about a reprint (letter to Alonzo de Vera Cruz: Corr., II, no. 256), but it lasted until the end of 1573 before he started in earnest. Cf. his letter to A. Copus, 27 February - 1 March 1574 (Corr., IV, no. 526: 'Summam S. Thomae rursus ad editionem Romanam et vetera exemplaria per theologos Lovanienses collatam et emendatam imprimere inchoavi in folio pro scholis'; Plantin adds that he had already retained paper to publish the Summa in 8⁰ at the request of the Jesuits, but continues to explain that the times are hard - and in fact an edition in 8⁰ of the Summa by the Plantin Press never materialized). |
Note 7 | A copy of the Summa was promised to the same A. Copus on 14-20 January 1575 (Corr., IV, no. 603). The Summa was listed among the works recently finished in a letter to the Lisbon bookseller Franciscus Mendez, 20 April 1575 (Corr., IV, no. 621). Two copies, worth 12 florins Carolus guilders, were among the works sold to the Italian bookseller Bocangelino on 9 June 1575 (Suppl. Corr., no. 241, page 274). |
Note 8 | As Plantin was in those years too busy on service books for Spain, the Summa was in fact printed for him and with his type by the Louvain printer Joannes Maes (Masius). Plantin also supplied the paper. In Arch. 31, folio 80, is entered, at the date of 2 May 1574, to the credit of J. Maes 'In Summa S. Thomae in parvo folio 104 folia à 2 florins Carolus guilders la fuelle: 208 florins Carolus guilders'. Maes continued to be paid in the following years substantial sums, but without the work he did being specified. In a letter from the Louvain printer to Plantin, 12 August 1574, some additional details are given (Corr., IV, no. 547): Maes recalls that he had shipped 2 baskets with the sheets of the Prima Pars S. Thomae, which he hopes by now Plantin would have get; he asks to send the baskets back with the paper needed for the continuation of the enterprise, promising to ship the Prima Secundae Pars by the next trip, and including in the meantime in the parcel accompanying the letter 14 sheets of the Secunda Secundae Pars. The letter ends with a bill of the printing jobs Maes had done for Plantin since November 1573, including the Prima Pars Summae Thomae (83 sheets, at 1 florins Carolus guilders per ream: 166 florins Carolus guilders), the Prima Secundae S. Thomae (84 sheets; 168 florins Carolus guilders) and the Secunda Secundae Pars (printed until the letter m; 120 florins Carolus guilders). From these data may be deduced that of the edition 1,000 copies were printed. |
Note 9 | In his letter Maes warns Plantin that the Louvain printer Servatius Sassenus had received paper for and was working with one press on 'Thomam cum Caietanum', and that it was in the interests of Plantin to have his publication on the market before his competitor (the work printed by S. Sassenus, Louvain, and T. Lyndanus, Antwerp, and published by the heirs of J. Steelsius, was issued in 1576: a copy in the Great Seminary, Bruges, and the Seminaire épiscopal, Tournai). |
Note 10 | Listed in M 296, folio 17v ([Summa S. Thomae] Eadem a⁰ [15] 75, f[euilles] 520, [price:] flor. 6). |
