Note 1 | French poem on the death of Charlotte of Bourbon, third wife of Prince William of Orange, deceased at Antwerp, 5 May 1582. |
Note 2 | The presentation is unusual. It is not impossible that the only known copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus is in fact but a proof, to which a title-page had to be added (and very likely the portrait of Duke Francis, which has nothing to do with Charlotte of Bourbon, changed into that of the princess). The possibility also exists that the edition was planned and partly executed, but finally not put onto the market. |
Note 3 | The printer-publisher is not given, but the existence of the portrait of Duke Francis makes it clear that he has to be identified with Plantin (who used the same plate in another of his publications: see no. cp010726). |
Note 4 | The author is also not cited, but may be supposed to be Jean de la Jessée, who had published by the Plantin Press a number of similar poems in 1582 (including in one of the works the plate with Duke Francis's portrait). BB, III, page 817, supposes the author to be Jean-François Le Petit, but without giving convincing arguments. |
