Note 1 | In his foreword to the reader, dated Antwerp, 13 June 1564, Plantin declares that this was his 4th [French] edition of the Secrets: 'et chacune des trois premieres fois avec adionction et amendement. Mais outre cela ie te la redonne maintenant en un ordre beaucoup meilleur, et bien plus facile, pour l'usage de quiconques s'en voudra servir, qu'il ne fut oncques'. On his initiative the three parts were rearranged in a more systematic manner so as to bring together the receipts on related subjects. The re-arrangement was made, according to the cost-accounting note quoted below, by Estienne de Walloncourt, who received for this work 4 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers |
Note 2 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folios 64 verso-65 recto, gives following details about 'Secrets de Piemontois 8⁰ françois': the wages for composition and printing - in all 67 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers - were paid from 5 March to 18 June 1564; other expenses: 'pour 4 copies rompues à les mectre en autre ordre, 16 stuivers' and 'Pour la faceon de la table a m[aistr]e Estienne [de Walloncourt] payé 4 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers', bringing the overall costs for the 'impression' to 72 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers Two thousand copies were printed. As each copy contained 35 sheets, this meant that, including the imperfections, 145 reams of paper were used. Of these, 20 reams were 'papier fin à l'aigle et daufin de Pericart', at 1 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers per ream, worth 23 florins Carolus guilders The other 135 reams were 'petit commun de Rouen', at 12 stuivers per ream; but as of this consignment some reams had been damaged, this loss, valued at 1 florins Carolus guilders 7 stuivers, had to be added to the expenses, bringing the overall costs for the paper to 105 florins Carolus guilders 7 stuivers The edition, consequently, costed in total 178 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers |
Note 3 | A number of copies must have received a title-page with the imprint of the Parisian bookseller, Martin le Jeune (see following no.). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 18 recto ([Secrets d'Alexis]. In 8⁰ Anno -, f[euilles] 35, [price:] stuivers 5). |
