Note 1 | In the list of his editions printed at Leiden of which Plantin presented a copy to the magistrate of the city on 2 January 1585, figures also 'Epistola Remberti Dodonaei ad amicum, in 8⁰' (cf. E. Hulshoff Pol, 'Boucken op 't secreet. Plantijndrukken op het raadhuis te Leiden' in Leids Jaarboekje, 1972, page 93). No copy is known. In the list of 1595 it is noted as 'Eiusdem epistola' and in the catalogues of 1595 and 1597 as 'Eiusdem epistola apologetica' (Hulshoff Pol, op. cit.). It is possible, as suggested by Hulshoff Pol, that it has something to do with the two letters from Dodonaeus to Julius Alexandrinus, one called 'De faba epistola', the other 'Epistola altera: de phaselo', reproduced in Dodonaeus, Stirpium historiae pemptades sex, Antwerp, Plantin, 1583, pages 598-602. Julius Alexandrinus replied to Dodonaeus's letter and this reply was printed under the title Iulii Alexandrini ad Rembertum Dodonaeum Epistola apologetica, Frankfurt, Wechel, 1584 (copy of the publication in UL Bonn: cf. Hulshoff Pol, op. cit.). Very likely the Epistola ad amicum, printed by Plantin, was a reply from Dodonaeus to the reply from Alexandrinus. |
