| Note 2 | In the dedicatory to Cardinal Granvelle, 11 November 1567, a long eulogy of the cardinal as patron of letters, Plantin tells incidentally that the cardinal forwarded him the text. In the note to the reader the typographer adds some specific details: he reiterates the statement that the manuscript was sent to him by Granvelle from Italy; he specifies further that, as some time ago he himself had already published the text of Virgilius after the edition of Manutius (1565/66: see no. cp010862), he decided to bring Ursinus's text in the same format (in 8⁰) and in the same type as this Virgilius publication. To make comparisons easier he even noted in the margins of the Ursinus edition the corresponding pages of his Virgilius publication. |

| Note 4 | As this was too late to present the edition at the September Frankfurt Fair, Plantin must have decided to give a number of copies a title-page with the year 1578 (see following no.), in order that, when they were put on sale in the Lent Frankfurt Fair of 1578, the work would not seem outdated. Other copies kept the date of 1567 on their title-page. |
| Note 5 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 121, gives only incomplete information on 'Virgilius collatus ad Graecos auctores' as precisely at that time Plantin's partnership with the Van Bomberghens was dissolved, and, consequently, the cost-accounting ledger ended. | Note 6 | The genesis and other details regarding the publication are evoked in a large number of letters of Plantin's correspondence. They show that Cardinal Granvelle practically ordered Plantin to print Ursinus's Virgilius - and that the task of writing the dedicatory to Cardinal Granvelle has also been forced upon the somewhat reluctant typographer. Suppl. Corr., no. 14 (Granvelle to Ursinus, 20 August 1566: about the work in general); Corr., I, no. 40 (Plantin to Granvelle, 22 June 1567: 'Suivant l'ordonnance de V.R.S. et ma promesse, j'ay mis, incontinent avoir receu la copie, la main à faire imprimer l'oeuvre sur Virgile, ce dont aussi j'envoye ici la seconde feille, que j'ay faicte la première, à cause que je n'avois pas d'épistre ne de préface, qui se pourra faire à meilleur loisir cependant que je poursuivray le corps de l'ouvrage'); Suppl. Corr., no. 14 (where in note is referred to a letter to the cardinal from M. Morillon, 23 June 1567, in which the representative of Granvelle in the Netherlands tells that he passed Granvelle's epistle together with Ursinus's text to S.
