| Note 1 | Announced on the title-page as being the fourth edition, the first having been published at Louvain by M. Rotarius, 1552, the second and third at Cologne by J. Soter in 1553 and 1557. In the dedicatory and in the 'Ad lectorem' the author gives details about the revisions made as compared with the preceding editions, affirming that one of the important innovations had been done at the suggestion of Plantin in order to facilitate the consultation of the treatise. He quotes as scholars who helped him with their advice or otherwise Andreas Balenus, professor of Hebrew at Louvain, and Cunerus, priest of St. Peter at Louvain. |
| Note 2 | According to Andreas Valerius the real author of the grammar was in fact Andreas Gennepius, professor of Hebrew at Louvain from 1532 until 1568, who, he says, dictated the work to Isaac during the stay of the German scholar at Louvain. This information Valerius got from Joannes Molanus, the Louvain doctor in theology, who heard it from Gennepius himself. Gennepius has indeed helped Isaac in Louvain, but it may be surmised that regarding the Hebrew Grammar he only assisted Isaac in refining the Latin text (in Latin the German scholar was at first not very fluent). |
| Note 3 | In the 'Ad lectorem' Isaac tells also that in order to amend his Grammar and the Thesaurus linguae sanctae of Santes Pagnini (see no. cp012200), he spent some months at Antwerp in the house of Plantin (cf. also Plantin's letter to J. Mofflin, [March] 1568: Corr., I, no. 117, page 257). This is confirmed by the Plantinian archives: on 11 March 1564 Plantin notes that he went with 'M. Jehan Isaac' at Louvain 'pour faire visiter sa grammaire en Hebrieu et le Thesaurus linguae Sanctes Pagnigi' (Arch. 3, folio 7v); on 20 April 1564 is entered that 'Monsieur Isaac' had already received 20 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, that he has now been paid cash 25 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers 'sans des despens que ie luy ay administrés. Or il luy restoit pour laccord faict du Thesaurus linguae Sanctae Sanctes Pagnini, accordé avec luy à 15 escus, 5 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers Et pour venir de Cologne il avoit mandé vouloir avoir 20 escus. Parquoy luy restoit lesd. 25 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers Sur quoy il m'a rabbatu 25 stuivers sur la voicture des hardes de son fils qu'il me laisse pour envoyer à Paris. Depuis luy encores baillé 2 florins Carolus guilders d'or qui font 3 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers' (Arch. 36, page 70). |

| Note 5 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 66, gives the following details about 'Grammatica Heb. Isaaci, 1564': on 9 april were paid 6 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers 'pour dresser les casses et la seconde feille sign. B.'; the wages for composing and printing are entered till 28 May 1564, and amount in all to 39 florins Carolus guilders 19 stuivers Of the edition 1,250 copies were printed. As each copy contains 21½ sheets, 56 reams (including the 'imperfections') of 'papier carré Pericart' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 3½ stuivers per ream, came to 65 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 105 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers Plantin concludes 'J'en ay délivré 100 à l'aucteur pour sa copie' (on 4 June 1564 Plantin notes the shipment to Jehan Isaac of '50 de ses Grammaires que ie luy ay envoyés en déduction de 100 exemplaires que ie luy ay promis': Arch. 3, folio 12v). |
