Note 1 | Description of a largely archaeological tour made in 1575, which went from Antwerp over Malines, Louvain and Liège, through Luxembourg to Trier and the region of Lorraine. In the form of a letter to Gerard Mercator by A. Ortelius and his fellow traveller, Joannes Vivianus (Vivien: a merchant from Valenciennes and humanist, residing in Antwerp, before he left the Netherlands, first for Aachen, then to London), and dated 7 October 1575 (pages 3-69). It is followed by the transcription of a medieval text on bishop Notger of Liège (died 1008), found in a church at Liège, by another companion of Ortelius on this trip, Hieronymus Scholierius (pages 70-76: 'Leodii ad D. Ioann. Evangelistae, tab. membranea, cuius sit mentio pag. 18'; at the end: 'Describebat ex autographo Hieronymus Scholierius huius itineris comes'). |
Note 2 | Listed in M 296, folio 9v ([Itinerarium] Ortelii et Viviani, 8⁰, a⁰ 84, f[euilles] 6, [price:] stuivers 4), and M 321 ('et six fig[ures] de cuivre': in fact there are only five engravings). |
