Note 1 Collection of 'Sacred Poems' by L. Torrentius and his friend Carolus Langius (Langhius, de Langhe; Berquin near Cassel, c. 1521 - Liège, 29 July 1573, canon of St. Lambert at Liège): A) A first part with poems by L. Torrentius: Ad Pium Quintum pont. maximum (pages 3-4); Hymnorum de partu Virginis libri III (pages 5-65); Ad Ioannem Moronum card. sacri senatus principem (page 66); Hymnorum de Puero Iesu liber unus (pages 67-98); Ad Gulielmum Sirletum cardinalem (page 99); In Natalem Christi elegia (pages 100-116) [N.B.: the poems 'ad…' being in fact a kind of dedicatory preceding the 'sacred poems' proper], and ending with an approbatio of Arias Montanus bearing on the three major 'poems' of this first part (page [117]), and a letter from Langius to Plantin. In this letter the canon explains that going through the manuscript of De partu Virginis, he appreciated it so much that he urged Torrentius to read it in public; as the author refused obstinately, he obtained with difficulty the permission to make a copy - which he now sends to Plantin, asking to print it in a hurry before Torrentius could stop the production; he finally affirms that soon more and even greater works may be expected from Torrentius and his two promising nephews, Papius and Livineius; B) A second part (genesis not explained) with some poems by Torrentius (Ad Antonium Perenottum Granvellanum: page [121]; In Ioannis Austriaci navalem de Turcis victoriam: pages [122-128]), and a series of poems by Langius (In navalem Christianorum de Turcis victoriam: pages [129-135]; Hymnus in Natali Domini nostri Iesu Christi, praecipue ad Iudaeos: pages [137-146]; Paraphrasis in orationem evangelicam: pages [147-148]; Hymnus ad Christum: pages [148-149]; In Europam seditionibus agitatam: pages [149-151]).
Note 2 In his letter of 14 November 1572 to de Çayas Plantin tells that he had already shipped some months before to the secretary of Philip II a number of books, including a copy of 'Poemata Laevini Torrentini' (Corr., III, no. 432, page 220).
Note 3 Listed in M 296, folio 10v (Levini Torrentii Poëmata, in 4⁰, [price:] stuivers 2½, 1572) and folio 14v (Poëmata Levini Torrentini cum nonnullis Langii in 4⁰, A⁰ 1572, f[euilles] 19, [price:] stuivers 5½). These entries could mean that while part of the edition had both the poems by Torrentius and Langius, copies also circulated with only the first half of the edition, the 'Sacred Poems' by L. Torrentius (pages 1-120).
