| Note 2 | The sum Ortelius had to pay for printing the texts is not explicitly noted in Plantin's ledger, but at the date of 21 December 1584 (Arch. 19, folio 181; text reproduced in Denucé, II, page 201) the possibility of printing this Additamentum is incidentally mentioned. Plantin owed Ortelius at that date 1,044 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers, including 620 florins Carolus guilders for a large number of copies of the French Theatrum of 1581 (cf. no. 1819: 'et desquels il nous accomodera d'ung an de terme du paijement veu la mauvaise vente ensuivie etc. et accommodera suivant qu'en accorderons touchant l'impression des figures en l'additament en françois en cas que on le face translater et imprimer'. |
