| Note 1 | According to Bib. Belgica (1964–1970 éd.) 'réimpression, avec une autre préface et une autre table, de l'édition de Paris, Est. Groulleau, 1559'. Vaganay, however, knows only an edition by Groulleau published in 1560 (quoted after Brunet, I, Column 217). The earliest edition he cites is the one published in Paris by Jean Longis and Rob. le Manguier in 1559. For 1560 he also enumerates, besides Plantin's and Groulleau's editions, a Lyons-publication by Gabriel Cotier. It was not possible to verify which of these 1559 and 1560 editions served as model for Plantin's publication, and to what extent the model has been followed. |
| Note 2 | The introductory letter 'Au lecteur' is, in any way, completely different from the one published in the Parisian edition of 1559 by J. Longis and R. le Mangnier (reproduced by Vaganay). Very likely the letter in Plantin's edition was written by the printer himself (see for example the allusion to his printing of Amadis de Gaule, which would appear in 1561: 'Cependant, ami Lecteur, que je parachevrai d'imprimer tous les livres d'Amadis de Gaule, ja par nous bien avancés, je te suppli prendre nôtre intention, et petit labeur en aussi bonne part, comme j'ai affection d'imprimer choses, dont tu te puisses servir'). Interesting in this letter 'Au lecteur' is the long discussion on the way of orthographing the French texts reproduced in the book. |

| Note 4 | The first copies were already sold in January 1560 (2 copies, for 5 stuivers, on 2 January to H. Albertsz, Amsterdam: Arch. 35, folio 108 recto). On 12 March 1560 150 copies were shipped to Paris (Arch. 35, folio 110 recto), and, later in the year, on 8 December 1560, another 50 copies, billed for 7 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, to the Parisian bookseller, Lucas Brayer (Arch. 35, folio 117 recto). |
