Note 1 | Catholic defence against the affirmations in the anonymous publication De la cheute de l'Eglise Romaine, avec toute son idolatrie, Par laquelle ruine un chascun peut considerer et cognoistre, la distinction entre la première Eglise, de laquelle Christ est chef, et l'autre mauldicte. |
Note 2 | This seems to have been the editio princeps (and in fact the only known edition). The long introductory chapter, dated Antwerp, 12 March 1567, and signed 'Orateur P.C. d'Ollone', makes it clear that the latter, belonging very likely to the same order as Porthaesius, and anyway in the possession of a manuscript copy of Porthaesius's apology, when passing through Antwerp, could interest a local publisher to issue it. |
Note 3 | Printed by Plantin for his Antwerp colleagues, Jean and Emanuel Philip Trognaesius (or Tronaesius). On the title-page is only named Emanuel Philip, but in Plantin's accounts and catalogues Jean is also mentioned. |
Note 4 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 119 verso, gives the following details about 'Livre de la cheute etc. de l'esglise Rom[aine]': the wages for composing and printing are entered on 3 May (quires A-R) and 28 June 1567 (quires S-Z, a-h) and amount to 57 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers 'Il est imprimé pour Jehan et Philippes Emanuel Tronesius', and immediately below ''J'en ay receu pour le payement en diverses fois florins Carolus guilders 67 stuivers 10'. It seems, consequently, that the paper must have been supplied by Trognaesius. |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 5 recto (Declaration cathol[ique] de Prothesius, 8⁰, p[ou]r Jo. Tronesius, f[euilles] -, [price:] stuivers 7), and M 164, folio 10 recto (…pour Jo. Trognesius…). |
