Augustini sententiae tres notatu dignissimae (69-71); Epistolarum et Evangeliorum praefatio (epistola ad lectorem: 72-80); Epistolae et Evangelia, quae dominicis et festis diebus…de more catholico, in templis recitantus (81-427; with annotations by Canisius [in italic type], presented in the Table as 'Accedunt succincta scholia, quȩ vice commentarii esse possunt'); Epistolae et Evangelia Sanctorum festis diebus (pages 433-511; circumscribed in the Table as 'Inseruntur his sacris lectionibus collectae quas vocant, seu communes Ecclesiae precationes, una cum hymnis et canticis quibusdam vere spiritualibus, et piorum solenni more comprobatis', with some annotations [in italic type], and preceded by a 'De festis sanctorum diebus praefatio' [429-430; in italic type] and a 'De festis diebus beatissimae Mariae Virginis [praefatio]' [431-432]). |
Note 2 | The first part (Calendar; Capita doctrinae; Testimonia Scripturae Sanctae; B. Augustini sententiae tres notatu dignissimae) is also found in the first part of the Institutiones christianae pietatis, seu parvus catechismus catholicorum (see nos. cp012236 and cp012473). Both publications differ then from each other: the Institutiones…seu parvus catechismus…giving the 'preces horariae', the 'meditationes' and the 'orationes'; the Institutiones et exercitamenta christianae giving the 'Epistolae et Evangelia'. |
Note 3 | Canisius's treatise appeared for the first time at Ingolstadt, Alexander et Samuel Vueyssenhornius, 1556, under the title Lectiones et precationes ecclesiasticae. Opus novum et frugiferum plane, in usum scholarum Catholicarum, omniumque pietatis verae studiosorum, and was reprinted by the same in 1557 (De Backer-Sommervogel, II, Column 667). The 1566 Plantin-edition is next on the list. The title has been changed and the foreword to the reader, dated Augsburg, 1565, shows that the author revised and added to his text. This he can have done either at the request of Plantin or of Maternus Cholinus, the Cologne publisher, with whom Plantin edited in 1566 the Summa doctrinae christianae (see no. cp013199). |
Note 4 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 98, gives following details about 'Canisii Instructiones etc., 16⁰: the wages for the first sheet 'A B rouge et noir' were paid on 6 October 1565, for the second (C D) on 12 October 1565; between 10 October - 10 November payments for another 6½ sheets were made, and between 10 November and 1 December for 8 more. In all 44 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers The book contains 16 sheets and was printed at 1,500 copies, needing 49 reams 12 'mains', whilst the 'petit catechisme' (Institutiones christianae pietatis seu parvus catechismus…: see no. cp012236) contains 2½ sheets and was printed at 1,000 copies, needing 5 reams 8 'mains'; together 55 reams of paper 'moyen carré', which at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 77 florins Carolus guilders, bringing the overall costs to 121 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers Originally the text read 'Ledit livre contient 16 fueilles et a esté imprimé le petit catechisme ensemble à 25 cents et le reste à 15 cents': the latter part of the sentence (from: le petit catechisme…) was crossed and the text continued: 1500 qui font…'. This makes it clear that the first part (pages 1-16: Calendar) of both the Institutiones et exercitamenta (at 1,500 copies) and the Parvus catechismus (at 1,000 copies) were printed from the same type-composition. |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Canisii institut. Xnae Pietatis, 16⁰, f[euilles] 16, [price:] stuivers 3½) and folio 9v, and M 164, folio 5v. |
