Online bibliographical references
Note 1Illustrated commentaries on the works of Flavius Vegetius (pages 1-367) and Sextus Julius Frontinus (pages 403-419 [= for 383-399]), with additional notes (= pages 371-376) on the emperors of the dynasty of Valentinianus. Interlaced with a number of dedicatories and/or poems of the author and his work by friends.
Note 2Additional volume to the publication of the texts of Flavius Vegetius, Sextus Julius Frontinus and some other Roman authors on Roman military science, edited by G. Stewechius, and announced on its title-page (see no. cp010340). Presented formally as a separate edition, but forming in fact with the text-volume one publication, the two volumes being normally sold together.
Note 3Printed in Leiden, but a number of copies received a title-page with Plantin's Antwerp imprint.
Note 4The 'Notae librorum ex quibus profecimus in hoc commentario' (page [8]) lists Stewechius's sources for his comments (and for his text-edition as well): Editio vetus Coloniensis; vetus editio Parisiensis; Liber meus impressus vetustissimus, non deterior manuscripto; Liber optimae notae Collegii Trium Coronarum Coloniensis; Liber manuscriptus, quem a D. Melchiore Hittorpio decano sancti Cuniberti Colon [iensis] utendum accepi; Fragmentum manuscriptum, in quo duo libri priores Vegetii, et magna pars tertii, donum adolescentis docti, et optimi Guilielmi Masnuy Namurcensis; Vegetius in Teutonicam linguam translatus, et multis abhinc annis vulgatus; Quatuor libri manuscripti, qui apud nobilissimum, ac doctissimum virum Iacobum Susium; Liber Bonnensis ms. cuius lectiones petitae ex notis Francisci Modii; Editio Romana, qua idem Modius usus est. It may be supposed that he also consulted the edition by F. Modius, published in Cologne in 1580 (E. Legrand, Bibliographie hellénique des XVe et XVIe siècles, IV, Paris, 1962 [reprint], pages 231-232, no.748). The 'vetus editio Parisiensis' is perhaps to be identified with the edition of Budaeus, published in Paris in 1532 (Ibidem, III, page 342, no. 326).
Note 5The dedicatories contain some autobiographical details.
