Note 1 | Plantin published in 1570 two Hortuli in 16mo, both printed for him by Jan Withagen. One of them, which he noted in his account-book as 'ung hortulus Consilii Trident.', must have formed a special (and/or new) type of Hortulus. It contained 15 sheets, and may be identified with the edition of which the title-page is described here. The other, being of the traditional type, was simply called 'ung Hortulus animȩ', and contained 13 sheets. |
Note 2 | Both 'hortuli' were printed, together with a 'diurnale Romanum novum in 16º' containing 15 sheets, and 'deux quarts ung du Hortulus, ung du Diurnal' being one sheet. In all 51 sheets. For each sheet 3 reams of paper were used, meaning that 1,500 copies were printed. They were paid to Withagen 2 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers per ream, for a total of 344 florins Carolus guilders (of which 82 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers for the 'ordinary' 'Hortulus animae' and 101 florins Carolus guilders 5 stuivers for the 'Hortulus Consilii Tridentini'). The payments were made by Plantin from 6 February until 9 September 1570 (Arch. 16, folio 134; also detailed in the 'livre de caisse' for 1570: Arch. 28). |
