Note 1 | Contains: A. Narrative of the negotiations of Possevinus, as representative of Pope Gregorius XIII, in Russia, with a description of the country: a) De rebus Moscoviticis commentarius: Ad Greg. XIII. Pont. Max., regarding especially the religious situation in 'Muscovy' (pages 7-132); b) Report on the public discussion on the Catholic religion Possevinus held in Moscow with Tsar Ivan IV, 21 February 1582 (pages 133-158); c) Detailed exposition on the differences between the Catholic and Greek-Orthodox churches, presented in Moscow to Ivan IV, 3 March 1582 (pages 159-192); d) An exposition presented to Ivan IV, refuting a similar exposition forwarded by English merchants and presenting the Pope as the anti-Christ ('…scriptum, magno Moscoviae duci traditum. Cum Angli mercatores eidem obtulissent librum, quo haereticus quidam ostendere conabatur, Pontificem Maximum esse Antichristum') (pages 193-210); B. Text of the negotiations between the ambassador of Stephanus I, King of Poland, and Ivan IV, Tsar of Russia, at which Possevinus was present, Moscow, 13 December 1581 - 15 January 1582 (pages 211-316). |
Note 2 | Reprint of the edition published in Wilna (Lithuania), apud Ioannem Velicensem, 1586 (De Backer-Sommervogel, 6, Columns 1071-1072), but without the last part (Epistolae Gregorii XIII. Pont. Max., Stephani primi Poloniae Regis, Joannis Basilii Magni Moscoviae Ducis, et aliorum, quae citro ultroque commearunt, dum Antonius Possevinus Legationes ad eos obibat). In 1587 the Moscovia, together with other works of Possevinus, was also published at Cologne, in Officina Birckmannica, sumptibus Arnoldi Mylii (De Backer-Sommervogel, 6, Column 1072). |
Note 3 | This publication was forced upon Plantin by the powerful d'Assonleville, councillor of Philip II at Brussels, who must have received the text (a copy of the Wilna-edition?) from Possevinus himself with the request to have it published in the Netherlands (cf. Plantin's letter to d'Assonleville, October 1586 [Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1147]: 'Tu igitur Illustris admodum et amplissime, accipe quod grati reddimus (remittimus) ab ipso auctore Clarissimo doctissimoque Domino Antonio Possevino tibi oblatum, ut nostra opera piis regionis hominibus communicaretur, ad bonum Reip. Christianae'). Cf. also Plantin's letters to the Bishop of Tournai, 2 January 1586 (Ibidem, no. 1063) and to d'Assonleville, 13 June 1586 (Ibidem, no. 1111). See also the letter of Grimaldi to Jan Moretus, 7 October 1586, about the privilege (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1151). |
Note 4 | Copies of the edition were mailed to d'Assonleville on 27 December 1586 (Ibidem, no. 1183: 3 bound copies and 25 copies 'en blanc') and to the Abbot of St. Bertin, 5 January 1587 (Ibidem, no. 1190: 1 copy). The publication was thus already finished at the end of 1586. |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 11v (Moscovia Antonii Possevini, 8⁰, f[euilles] 21, [price:] stuivers 7), and M 321. |
