Note 1 | The 'Series chartarum' shows that in the only known copy, described here, are missing: a) in 2nd part, the quires T8 and V10; b) an appendix described as 'Modus cantandi, † ternio'. It also results from The 'Series chartarum' that Regius, Indices Romani missalis (see no. cp012358), formed an integral part of the edition. |
Note 2 | In September 1575 Plantin tells de Virbiesca that he is printing a 'Missale in grande 4to' (Corr., V, no. 648). In his letter of 4 November 1575 he specifies that there are 2,200 copies, which he hopes to have finished within some months (Ibidem, no. 667). On 4 January 1576 he affirms that these 2,200 missals will be ready within some eight days (Ibidem, no. 690). |
Note 3 | They were actually shipped to Spain on 16 January 1576: 2,268 'Missals 4⁰ grands pap[ier] fine' (Arch. 22, folio 75r, no values noted; cf. Plantin's letter to de Virbiesca, 31 January 1576: Corr., V, no. 700). This annotation makes it clear that, contrary to many missals published by Plantin in those years, only copies with woodcuts were put on the market. |
