| Note 2 | In the foreword Plantin explains that having printed the Latin text and a Dutch translation, these editions met such a success that some of his friends urged him to also bring out a French version. |
| Note 3 | The translation was made by Gabriel Chappuys as specified on the title-page. On 14 September 1588 Plantin tells Franciscus Costerus that he has sent the Manuale to Paris to have it translated (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1404). |
| Note 4 | As already done for the Latin and Dutch editions of 1588 and 1589, a number of copies were illustrated with woodcuts, another number with intaglio-prints (see following no.). |
| Note 5 | This translation was dedicated to the wife of an influential official, F. Garnier, secretary of Philip II at Brussels. On 1 February 1589 Plantin asked Garnier for his permission to dedicate the work to his 'compagne', sending at the same time a copy of the dedicatory. Garnier could make any changes he wishes but was urged to return the revised text quickly so that the printer could immediately start with the production (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1433). Already on 28 April 1589 Plantin was able to mail to Garnier 12 bound and 12 unbound copies (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1461). Garnier was very pleased (cf. Plantin's undated answer to a letter from the secretary dated 7 May 1589: Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1463), and, when Plantin refused payment for the copies he sent and for other books he delivered to Garnier, expressed his gratitude in another way, by presenting a golden cup (cf. Corr., VIII-IX, page 522). |
