| Note 1 | Latin translation by the Augsburg physician Hieremias Martius of the French edition of Grévin's Deux livres des venins and his French translation of Les oeuvres de Nicandre, as published by Plantin in 1568 (see nos. cp010933 and cp012138). |
| Note 2 | Hieremias Martius took the initiative and proposed Plantin to publish his Latin translation of Grévin's publication. In his letter of 9 July 1568 to Martius, Plantin accepted to print the manuscript whenever he should receive it (Corr., I, no. 141). He repeated the offer in his letter of 31 July 1568, adding that, in remuneration of Martius's work, he could only present 12 or 20 copies of the publication. If this was not to Martius's liking, Plantin declared himself willing to print to order, without charging a fee for the use of his blocks (Corr., I, no. 150). Martius's reply is not known, but whatever the solution he chose, the printing became again a rather protracted affair: on 4 February 1570 Plantin has to write to the German physician that he met difficulties in obtaining the privilege, but that by now the document was promised before Lent, and that, consequently, he hopes to finish the printing before the Frankfurt September Fair (Corr., II, no. 206). Plantin, in fact, does not seem to have asked a new privilege, but used the ones which had served for the French edition of 1568. The difficulties with the privilege were only a handy excuse. The real reason for the slow progress (as Plantin let it also be clearly understood in his letter of 4 February 1570) was the fact that the printing of liturgical works for Spain was in those years consuming all Plantin's energy and working capital. |
| Note 3 | Plantin finally passed the job of composing and printing the text to one of his former employees, Hendrik Alsens, who had established himself as a bookprinter, and who in those years executed similar orders for his former master. In the note of 7 March 1571 about the 'compte faict avec Henric Alsens de ce qu'il a imprimé pour moy' figures the entry 'Le livre des Venins ABCDEFGHIKLMNOPQR doubles, font 34 feilles, font cinquante et quatre rames et 8 mains à ung florins Carolus guilders la rame: 54 florins Carolus guilders' (Arch. 31, folio 91). Alsens, consequently, printed sheets A-R, but nothing is said about sheets *, **, and S-Y. Very likely they too were executed by Alsens, but after 7 March 1571, and without being specified in the later payments (Arch. 31, folio 100, lists for the period 10 March-28 July 1571 a number of payments for unspecified jobs made 'à bon conte [= compte] 'to Alsens). The number of reams used imply that about 800 copies were printed. |
