Note 1 | The comedies of Terentius, edited by M. Antonius Muretus. |
Note 2 | In the foreword to the reader Plantin explains how Cornelius Valerius let him know that the Terentius edited by M. Antonius Muretus and published by Paulus Manutius (first edition: Venice, 1555; reprints in 1558/59, 1560, 1561, 1563, 1565: cf. Brunet, V, Column 714; Renouard, Annales de l'imprimerie des Alde, 1834) was the best text-edition up to this time. He, consequently, had it reprinted, 'additis e Lipsiana (Leipzig ?) editione personarum omnium etymis'. The typographer detailed furthermore the small alterations and adaptations he made. |
Note 3 | Complementary to this edition was a volume with annotations by Muretus, announced on the title-page of the [Opera], and referred to in Plantin's foreword, but presented as a separate publication and in fact often sold separately (cf. no. 2295. |
Note 4 | According to the colophon the printing was finished on 21 August 1565. |
Note 5 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 97, gives the following details about 'Terentius 16⁰': the wages for composing and printing quires A-D are entered on 7 July, for quires E-V on 18 August 1565, and amount to 27 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers As each copy contains 10 sheets and as 1,500 copies were printed, 31 reams of paper 'grand carré' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers per ream, came to 49 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 76 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 18v ([Terentius in 16⁰] Idem A⁰ 1565, f[euilles] 10, [price:] stuivers 2). |
