Note 1 | Reprint of the preceding editions. |
Note 2 | The printer's mark (⊕ 42) on the title-page has been used for the books printed at the Officina Plantiniana at Leiden. The Antwerp printer's address is also typical for the ones Plantin used for those of his publications which were actually printed at Leiden. Moreover, the wood-blocks for the illustrations were certainly at that time in Holland (39 of the blocks were used in the Leiden Aesopus-edition of 1586: see no. 18; they appear also in the Faernus reprint published by the Officina Plantiniana Raphelengii at Leiden in 1600). It may, consequently, be assumed that the 1585 Faernus edition was printed by Plantin at Leiden. Very likely, as was generally the case with the editions of the Plantin Press at Leiden in those years, part of the edition received a title-page with the Leiden-address, another part a title-page with the Antwerp imprint, but only copies with the Antwerp address are known. |
