| Note 1 | Moralizing treatise on the miseries and fragility of human life (pages 11-58), preceded by two short poems by Caspar Barlaeus, brother of Melchior, on the same subject (Hominis afflicti querimonia: page 9; Eiusdem hominis afflicti consolatio ex Cicerone: page 10), and followed by a longer poem by Melchior, dedicated to Caspar, bearing on the same topic (pages 59-63). From the dates given in the foreword and the poem to Caspar it is clear that Melchior Barlaeus wrote his text in 1565 in Padua, probably when studying at the university in that Italian city. |

| Note 3 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 91 verso, gives following details about 'De miseriis humanae vitae Barlaei': the wages for composing and printing the sheets A-D are noted on 9 and 17 March [1566] and amount to 4 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers Only 150 copies were printed on 'papier de Lyon fin bon'; 25 'mains' were used, costing 2 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers The overall costs were consequently 7 florins Carolus guilders 11 stuivers Other details are not given, but it is very likely that the edition was commissioned and paid by the author. |
