Note 1 | On the title-page and in the title of the table on page [3] is specified that this Processionale was more especially intended for the Cathedral of Antwerp. The text, however, is the same as in the 'general' Processionale of that year (cf. preceding no.). It may be supposed that Plantin had been commissioned (or more or less forced) to publish a Processionale for the Antwerp Cathedral, but, as text and music were valid for the other churches in the Netherlands, to assure a larger sale, he had a number of copies arranged for 'general consumption'. Cf. for a similar case: Pastorale,no. cp011687. |
Note 2 | Compared with the 'general' Processionale described in the preceding no., only the title-page and the title of the table on page [3] are reset, while the error in the pagination, 9 for 39 has been corrected. However, in the only known copy of the Processionale for the Antwerp Cathedral, pages 5-12 have been cut away and replaced by pages showing only the staff (printed in red). Some of them are formed by two pages pasted together, bearing a printed text (= proof-page of the Processionale itself) on the sides pasted together, and the red staff on the 'open' sides: thus pages [5-6] have on the pasted together sides pages 149 and 205, pages [9-10] have pages 149 and 149, and pages [11-12] have pages 205 and 205. The use of proof-pages shows that this must have been done in the Plantin Press itself, but the reason is not clear as the 'operation' has left unfinished one hymn and cut the beginning of another. Have also been cut away (and the text in this way mutilated) and replaced by pages with staff: pages 129-132 and 141-144. |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 14v (Processionale eccles[iae] Antverp[iensis], 4⁰, 1574, f[euilles] 39, [price:] stuivers 12). |
