Note 1 | Latin translation by Carolus Clusius of large extracts of Costa's Tratado de las drogas medicinas y plantas de las Indias Orientales, Burgos, 1578; with the addition of some personal remarks. |
Note 2 | In his foreword, reproduced in the translation, Costa relates how having met Garcia ab Orto in India and having read his treatise on the Indian medicinal plants, Coloquios dos simples, e drogas he cousas mediçinais da India, printed and published at Goa, Joao de Endem (Audem), 1563, he found so many mistakes in the work that he wrote his study to correct the errors, adding at the same time the description of some plants which had escaped the attention of Orto. |
Note 3 | In his own foreword Clusius explains that, having been forwarded a copy of the original Spanish version by a friend during his stay at London, he found the treatise interesting enough to have it translated into Latin and published; the more so as he had already translated and published the study of Garcia ab Orto, referred to by Costa (see nos. 1838-1840). The illustrations which adorns Costa's 1578-edition were, however, rejected by Clusius because they were too clumsy; exception made for one, which he could check with Orto's publication (the 'caryophyllis arbor' reproduced on page 31). |
Note 4 | In his foreword Clusius doesn't speak about the illustration on page 53 ('lignum colubrinum'), but the note on page 52 makes it clear that he had this reproduction made after the woodstump shown to him at London in 1581 by the Portuguese physician Hector Nunez. |
Note 5 | Very likely Clusius contacted Plantin for this edition on his return from London in 1581 (cf. the remarks in Clusius, Notae in Garciae Aromatum historiam, 1582: no. 1010). |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 1r (A Costa Christophori Aromatum orient. Indiȩ, f[euilles] 5½, [price:] stuivers 2) and folio 3r (Caroli Clusii versio a Costȩ Aro. orient. Indiȩ, 8⁰, f[euilles] 5½, [price:] stuivers 2), M 164, folios 1v and 6v, and M 321. |
