Note 1 Contains in four large sections poems by Ronsard, here and there interspersed with works by other poets: a) Les Amours (folios 1r-70r; containing also: Odes, 60r-70r; a 'sonet' by Nicolas Denisot, 59r); b) Continuation premiere et seconde des Amours (1r-80v; with its own title-page on 1r; containing: Continuation des Amours, 2r-25r; Gayeté, 25r-29v; L'Heure par Remi Belleau, 30r-31v; La cerise de Remi Belleau du Perche, 32r-34v; Le ciron de G. Aubert, 34v-37r; Lescargot de Remi Belleau, 37r-39v; Nouvelle continuation des Amours, 40r-74r; Traduction de trois sonets de P. de Ronsard par Remi Belleau [French sonnets with Latin translation], 74v-75v; Le rossignol cazanier de N. Mallot, 75v-79r; L'huitre de R. Belleau, 79r-80v); c) Le Bocage (1r-59r, with a poem 'à P. de Ronsard, 59v); d) Les Meslanges (60r-[108v]).
Note 2 The name of Plantin is nowhere mentioned, but there are references to a 1557 Ronsard-edition in the Plantinian archives, while Sabbe, op. cit., page 112, comparing type, fleurons and initials used, proved beyond doubt that the publication described here must have been issued by the Plantin Press.
Note 3 Reprint of three editions, published separately in Paris: Les Amours, Maurice de la Porte, 1553; Le Bocage, Maurice de la Porte, 1554; Les Meslanges, Gilles Corrozet and Vincent Sertenas, 1555 (cf. Guignard, op. cit., page 226).
Note 4 Copies of this 1557 Plantin-edition are only known with the Rouen-address of N. le Rous and the Basel-address of A. Godinet (see following no.). Very likely, however, a number of copies must have shown Plantin's imprint, and perhaps other addresses as well.
Note 5 The type and fleurons used on the title-page of both the Rouen- and the Basel-editions make it clear that they have been executed by the same press. Plantin does not seem to have been in direct relations with either N. le Rous or A. Godinet. The Parisian bookseller Arnould Langelier has perhaps acted as middleman. 34, page 12). This entry implies that of the edition two versions were printed, one on 'fine paper', the other on somewhat cheaper 'paper of Rouen'. It makes also clear that of part of the edition extra-copies have been issued (and consequently have been put into circulation); namely the section with the second title-page (Continuation premiere et seconde des amours de P. de Ronsard, containing the 10 quires A-K, folios 1r-80v). Plantin's note of the shipment to Langelier makes a careful distinction between two consignments. It may be assumed that one of them was in fact intended for the Rouen-dealer, the other for the Basel-dealer.
Note 6 Plantin sold other copies as well in 1557, 1558, 1559 and 1560: to Jacques Boschart, in Malines, one 'pour relier' and one '[qu'] il a prins pour son compte', worth 3½ stuivers, on 4 August 1557 (Arch. 38, folio 28v); to Jehan Steelsius 1 copy 'relié' on 13 October 1557 (Ibidem, folio 1v), to Jehan Bellart 100 copies on 12 November 1557 (? or 1556 ?) (Ibidem, folio 5v bis); to Jehan Steelsius 18 copies, worth 3 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers, on 14 March 1558 (Ibidem, folio 54v), to the same 1 bound copy, worth 5 stuivers, on 9 May 1559 (Ibidem, folio 58v); to Robert de Wall[encourt] 6 copies, worth 1 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers, on 19 January 1558 (Arch. 35, folio 6v); shipped to Paris on 12 March 1560 50 copies (Ibidem, folio 110r). In an undated note figure also, in a long list of Plantinian editions, 'pour envoyer' (= to Paris or Frankfurt ?), 100 copies, worth 10 florins Carolus guilders
Note 7 Listed in M 296, folio 1v (Amours et opuscules de Ronsard, a⁰ 1557, f[euilles] 33, [price:] stuivers 4), and M 164, folio 2v.
