Online bibliographical references
Note 1Text of Valerius Maximus, Dictorum factorumque memorabilium libri IX, edited by Stephanus Winandus Pighius (pages 21-430), followed by annotations on Valerius Maximus by the same scholar (separate pagination: pages 1-111).
Note 2In the dedicatory Pighius gives some interesting details on the genesis of his work. He had thought to finish the editing in three months but finally he needed six months. He used 8 to 10 manuscripts and was able to amend some 800 passages and to fill in a number of important gaps. Details on the manuscripts (including one he owned himself and which he called 'codex Campensis') and his other sources are given incidentally in the Annotationes. One of the manuscripts consulted by Pighius belonged to Theodorus Pulmannus and is now preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus, Ms. 15.9, bearing the inscription 'Sum Theodori Pulmanni Craneburgii. Hoc libro usus est Pighius in restituendo Maximo' (cf. Denucé, Manuscrits, pages 159-160, no. 204; see also further in Notes, Plantin's letter of 19 November 1567).
Note 3According to the colophon the printing was finished on 1 February 1567.
Note 4The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 112, gives the following details about 'Valerius Maximus in 8⁰': the wages for composing and printing are entered on 25 October 1566 (quires A-M: 12 sheets), 23 November 1566 (N-V: 8 sheets), 19 January 1567 (13 sheets), 8 February 1567 ('pour 2 feilles dont l'une est la table'), and amount, including 1 florins Carolus guilders 'pour les formats et reglettes etc.', to 77 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers For making the index Pierre Kerkhovius was paid 3 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, while Pighius received 24 florins Carolus guilders 'pour sa copie en argent'; together 104 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers As each copy contains 35 sheets and as 1,250 copies were printed, 92 reams (including 3 reams 10 'mains' for the 'imperfections') of paper 'longuet de Troye fin' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers per ream, came to 119 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 224 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers 'Revient à peu plus de 3½ stuivers pièce'. The making of the index by Petrus Kerkhovius is also mentioned (at an unspecified date: after 20 December 1566) in Arch. 31, folio 90v, where, however, a payment of 4 florins Carolus guilders is entered.
Note 5The Valerius Maximus is mentioned in a number of Plantin's letters (published in Corr., Suppl. Corr., and L. Voet, 'Plantin en de kring van Granvelle. Enkele nog onuitgegeven brieven en documenten' in De Gulden Passer, 37, 1959, pages 142-169): Corr., I, no. 22 (to de Çayas, 15 February 1567: 'J'ay achevé d'imprimer…Valerius Maximus fort bien corrigé par Monsigneur Stephanus Pighius…); L. Voet, pages 162-163 (to Pighius, 18 March 1567: 'je vous envoie par le porteur de la présente 6 Valeris Maximis liés'); L. Voet, page 163 (to Pighius, 11 August 1567: 'Ecce Valerium Maximum…mitto' - very likely not a printed copy but Pighius's manuscript of the edition); Suppl. His suggestion was followed in the reprint of 1574: see following no.); Corr., I, no. 84 (to de Çayas, 1 October 1567: shipment of a bound copy); L. Voet, page 166 (to Pighius, 19 November 1567: 'Mitto et Ausonium a Pulmanno emendatum. Is vero cupit sibi remitti exemplar suum Valeri Maximi' - the 'exemplar' Theodorus Pulmannus wished to get back was his manuscript of Valerius Maximus, now preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus: see above); Suppl. Corr., no. 74 (to Camerarius, 18 September 1568: shipment of a copy, worth 6 stuivers).
Note 6Listed in M 296, folio 19v (Valerius Maximus Stephani Pighii, 8⁰, A⁰ [15] 67, f[euilles] 35, [price:] stuivers 7½).
