Note 1 | Second edition of the preceding publication with an addition. The first part (foreword by L. Carrio; Itinera Constantinopolitanum et Amasianum: pages 5-74; and the Exclamatio with the changed sub-title De re militari contra Turcam instituenda consilium: pages 75-112) has been reissued with only minor changes. Has been added a second letter of Busbequius on another journey to Constantinople through Thracia, dated Constantinople, 14 July 1555 (pages 113-127). The first part was printed from a copy of the 1581-publication with manuscript corrections (preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus, R 19.6). It is not clear who made these corrections or supplied the new 'letter', but later correspondence between Plantin and Busbequius suggests that Busbequius himself had something to do with it. |
Note 2 | Busbequius and/or Micault tried to interest Plantin to publish two other letters Busbequius wrote on his stay in the Turkish Empire: on 1-8 May 1587 Plantin wrote to the ambassador at Paris that he had received the third letter, and that he was willing to print it, but as he understood that Busbequius had found back the text of his fourth letter, he would like to print them both in one volume. He asked, consequently, to send him the text of that fourth letter (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1248). It is not quite clear if Plantin received the text of that fourth letter. In any way, before he could start printing he was asked to return to Busbequius whatever manuscripts he had received: in a letter of 10 February 1589 to Micault Plantin affirms to have looked carefully through his papers but without finding anything; what he may have received in the past had been sent back to Busbequius (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1440). In that same letter Plantin affirms to have printed works of Busbequius three times ('Et finalement me suis advisé que j'ay imprimé de ses oeuvres par trois differentes fois'), but it may be assumed that Plantin confounded somewhat the issues, and made of the letter about the Thracian journey, added to the second edition, a 'third' publication. Very probably Busbequius wished Plantin to return the manuscripts in order to have them published under his supervision at Paris. This Paris-edition by Egidius Beys, Plantin's son-in-law, appeared already in 1589 under the title Augerii' Gislenii Busbequii D. Legationis Turcicae Epistolae quatuor, and contains, besides the two letters and the De re militari…consilium, printed by Plantin in 1581-1582, the two letters referred to in Plantin's epistle of 1587 (cf. BB, I, page 396). |
