Note 1 | Meditations on the hymn Ave Maris Stella. First edition. |
Note 2 | On 14 September 1588 Plantin announces to Costerus that he received the manuscript and will hand it over to Pardo (an Antwerp priest and librorum censor) for the approbatio (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1404; cf. also letter of 14 September - October 1588 to Costerus: Ibidem, no. 1406). In his letter of 7-18 January 1589 Plantin could tell that he had received the privilege for the work from Brussels and will start printing it (Ibidem, no. 1429). |
Note 3 | Plantin in a letter of 22 April 1588 (Ibidem, no. 1404) explains that he will have made seven illustrations 'pro Hymno Ave Stella', but this project does not seem to have materialized: no illustrated versions of the work are known. |
Note 4 | Plantin had also plans for a Dutch and a French translation. The Dutch translation was made by Godevaert van den Berghe, curate at Oosterweel, but remained in manuscript (this manuscript in Museum Plantin-Moretus-Museum; cf. also BB, I, page 885). The French translation seems to have been entrusted to a certain Cornille de Rosenburg, residing at Brussels, and must at the time of Plantin's death have been ready (cf. the letter of Jan Moretus to Rosenburg, 15-23 June 1589: Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1474), but this translation too was not published. |
Note 5 | Listed in M 296, folio 11v ([Meditationes] In Ave Maris Stella, 89, 16⁰, f[euilles] 7; [price:] stuivers 2), and Ms. 321. |
