| Note 1 | French translation of the De institutione feminae christianae, dedicated to Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII of England, and treating in four 'books' the education and 'instruction' of the young girl, the married woman, the widow; developing, especially in the first 'book', new principles on the possibilities of the woman far ahead of its time. The work became immediately a very popular manual for the education of girls. |
| Note 2 | The first Latin edition was published in Antwerp by Michel Hillen van Hoochstraten in 1524. The first French translations were issued in Paris by Jacques Kerver in 1543 and by Denys Janot in 1545. Cf. Palau y Dulcet, 27, page 413. |
| Note 3 | Plantin entrusted his translation to the Antwerp schoolmaster Antoine Tiron. In the very interesting dedicatory to the two Antwerp headmasters of schools for young girls, Sebastian Cuypres and Pieter Heyns, 1 June 1579 (reproduced in Corr., VI, no. 829), Plantin narrates the genesis of his publication. The two headmasters had asked him a new French edition of Vives's Institution, as they could not find enough copies [of other editions to be used for the instruction of the young girls in their schools]. Plantin agreed for two reasons; one 'pour le devoir de mon office…car…je confesse que celuy qui faict l'estat de l'imprimerie est tenu d'imprimer les livres que les prudents et sages precepteurs luy declarent estre utiles et propres à instruire et conduire la jeunesse à la vertu…'. Secondly, because he thought it to be an easy task, having to reprint only one of the already numerous editions on the market. However, reading the first pages [of an unspecified version] he was astonished by the poor language. Still optimistic, he took a Latin edition in order to make the necessary corrections in the French version before forwarding the copy to his employees, but he immediately became aware that the translator had so badly done the job that the text had to be revised completely. Not having the time to do it himself, he commissioned Antoine Tiron to make the new version. |
| Note 4 | Plantin's dedicatory and the one of the translator, A. Tiron, are both dated 1 June 1579; the privilege bears the date of 1 June 1576. It seems, consequently, that as early as 1576 Plantin had the intention to issue the work, but that, having to postpone the printing in order to get a trustworthy translation, it was finally only published three years later. |
