Note 1 | Contains in fact not 6 but 7 volumes (Hebraea, Chaldaea, Graeca et Latina nomina…quae in Bibliis sparsa leguntur, 1565 [described sub no. 1750] must be considered to be the last volume of this edition) and an appendix which presents itself as a continuation of the New Testament (Index rerum et sententiarum Veteris ac Novi Testamenti). |
Note 2 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 71, gives the dates of printing (or more precisely the dates on which the wages for composing and printing are entered) of the different volumes as follows: Vol. 1: 9 July-19 August 1564 'Excepté le premier cahier' (not specified when this first quire was later printed); Vol. 2: 26 August-6 October 1564; Vol. 3: 6 October-21 October 1564; Vol. 4: 14 October-4 November 1564; Vol. 5: 4 November 1564-21 January 1565; Vol. 6: 10 November 1564-24 December 1564; Appendix of vol. 6: 21-27 December 1564; Vol. 7: 21 January-24 February 1565. The dates on which the printing was finished are given in the colophons of the different volumes as follows: Vol. 1: 18 August 1564; Vol. 2: 3 October 1564; Vol. 3: 19 October 1564; Vol. 4: -; Vol. 5: 17 January 1565; Vol. 6: 22 December 1564; Vol. 6 bis: 29 January 1565. |
Note 3 | The note in Arch. 4, folio 71, details the numbers of copies printed: 1,250 for vols. 1, 2, 5; 2,500 for vols. 3, 4, 6 and 7. |
Note 4 | Other cost-accounting details in Arch. 4, folio 71: 'Biblia in 16⁰ par demyes feilles d'affustage'. Paper: 222 'signatures ou cahiers qui sont 111 feilles a 1250 lentiere Bible'. But, as part of the edition had been printed at 2,500 copies, for the 27 quires of Psalterium and Proverbia (vols. 3 and 4) 27 sheets more were needed, for the 41 quires of the Novum Testamentum (vol. 6) 20½ sheets, for the 14 quires of the Interpretatio nom[inum] Hebr. (vol. 7) 7 sheets. In all 152 sheets, making 396 reams; at 1 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers pcr ream: 465 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers Wages for composing and printing: 194 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers Total: 660 florins Carolus guilders 1 stuivers Plantin doesn't determine the cost-price per copy for the whole Bible but specifies that the additional copies of the New Testament were to be counted at 1½ stuivers per copy, the Psalterium and the Proverbia at ½ stuivers each, and the Index [= Interpretatio nominum Hebr.] at ¾ stuivers |
Note 5 | Listed in M 164, folio 4r, and M 296, folio 2r: 'Biblia lata in 16. continet f[euilles] 114 1/8, [price:] 1 florins Carolus guilders (subdivided: vol. 1: 21 feuilles; vol. 2: 26 1/8 f.; vol. 3: 6 f.; vol. 4: 7¼ f.; vol. 5: 22¾ f.; vol. 6: 20½ f.; vol. 7: 10½ f.)'. Vol. 6 is also listed separately in M 296, folio 18v: 'Testamentum Novum…Aº -, in 16, f[euilles] 20½, [price:] stuivers 3½'. |
Note 6 | The Novum Testamentum (vol. 6) is said to have 41 quires or 20½ sheets, that means: a-z8, A-S8 (folios 1-328). However, the appendix Index rerum et sententiarum Veteris ac Novi Testamenti (in the Museum Plantin-Moretus-copies: bound together not with the Novum Testamentum but with the Proverbia, in the KBR Royal Library of Belgium copies once following Proverbia and once the Hebraea, Chaldaea…nomina) presents in fact itself as a continuation of the Novum Testamentum as the quires are numbered T-Z8, &8, '8. The printing is entered in the cost-accounting note (Arch. 4, folio 71), but nothing is said about the amount of paper needed for the additional 7 quires or 3½ sheets, the number of copies printed and eventually if it was sold separately and at what price: Plantin must have overlooked in his accounts this part of his Bible. |
Note 7 | The mention 'Biblia in 16⁰ par demyes feilles d'affustage' means that the edition was printed in the special technique of the so-called 'imposition by half-sheet' (cf. L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, page 304). |
