| Note 1 | Latin translation of three plays of Euripides by Georgius Ratallerus (lawyer and magistrate at Utrecht, 1528 - 6 October 1581): Phoenissae (9-84; preceded by the 'argumentum' [summary] of the play by Ratallerus, 6-8), Hippolytus Coronatus (87-146; preceded by the 'argumentum', 85-86), and Andromacha (150-205; preceded by a dedicatory of Ratallerus to Theodoras Canteras, 147-148, and the 'argumentum', 149-150), followed by extracts from Greek poets preserved by Joannes Stobaeus and also rendered into Latin by Ratallerus (209-245). |
| Note 2 | On 14 May 1580 Plantin reacted favourably to the proposal from Ratallerus to publish his Latin translation of the works of Sophocles (Corr., VI, no. 877). The scholar mailed indeed his text on Sophocles, but he must have asked in the meantime if Plantin was also interested in the Latin translation of Euripides's Phoenissae, Hippolytus Coronatus and Andromacha. The letter has been lost, but in his epistle of September 1580 Ratallerus states that he is waiting for Plantin's reply on this particular project (Corr., VI, no. 888). Plantin's anwer must again have been favourable. The following correspondence between scholar and printer has also largely disappeared, but in the only preserved letter, of 27 January 1581, Ratallerus notes that he received with Plantin's letter of 29 December 1580 a list of some errors found by Raphelengius and Ze (?) in the Euripides translation and regrets that in this way the printing has been delayed, but he is sending now the corrections, together with some emendations regarding Sophocles (Corr., VI, no. 907). The death of Ratallerus in October of that year probably prevented the publication of his Sophocles translation, but according to the colophon the printing of the Euripides translation was finished on 1 February 1581. |
