Note 1 | Presented as additional notes to Clusius's Latin translation of Garcia ab Orto, Aromatum et simplicium aliquot medicamentorum apud Indos nascentium historia, 1579 (3rd edited by: see no. 1840). As explained on the title-page and in the dedicatory to Batthyany these notes are in fact the results of interviews regarding exotical plants Clusius had had, during a stay at London in 1581, with Sir Francis Drake and his companions (especially a certain Eliot), returned from their periplus around the world (1577-1580). |
Note 2 | Very likely for this edition Clusius contacted Plantin at Antwerp on his return from London (cf. letter of Plantin to Camerarius, 19 April 1581, explaining that Clusius was in London and that the typographer expected him soon in Antwerp for discussing the illustrations of the Rariorum aliquot stirpium per Pannoniam: Corr., VI, no. 926). On 23 November 1581 Plantin told Camerarius that he expected the dedicatory [of the Notae] and that after reception he would start immediately printing the work ('Dedicatorias pro versionibus Clusii expecto et statim ubi recepero earum impressionem auspicabor': Suppl. Corr., no. 166). The dedicatory is in fact dated 1 January 1582. According to the colophon the printing was finished in February 1582. |
