Note 1Edition of letters of partisans of the Spanish King intercepted by the party of the States-General. Contains: pages [2-4]: 'Au lecteur salut', being an exposition on the importance of intercepted letters for the knowledge of the intentions of the enemy; [5-40]:.Series of letters of Cardinal Granvelle sent to personalities in the Netherlands, all dated Madrid: addressed to Maximilian Morillon, vicar-general for Granvelle of the archbishopric of Malines (pages [5-12]: 6 July 1580; [13-22]: 6 July 1580), count Mansfeld (pages [23-25]: 8 July 1580), councillor d'Assonleville (pages [25-27]): 30 June 1580), councillor Richardot (pages [28-30]: 30 June 1580), count Busquoy (pages [31-33]: 8 July 1580), councillor d'Assonleville (pages [33-36]: 6 July 1580), councillor le Vasseur (pages [36-38]: 6 July 1580), M. Morillon (pages [39-40]: 11 July 1580); [41-52]: Series of letters sent by the President of the State-Council, Jean Fonck, all dated Madrid, and addressed to councillor de Vaulx (pages [41-43]: 11 July 1580) and the Bishop of Liège (pages [44-47]: Latin text, 11 July 1580; [48-52]: French translation). The letters in both series are accompanied by marginals giving explanations and comments on particular points.
Note 2Type and initials point to Plantin as printer. The typographer, however, did not wish to put his own name on this pamphlet vilipending his old patron Granvelle, but preferred to give his son-in-law as the responsible publisher (cf. Rooses, M. Musée Plantin-Moretus, pages 146 and 202).
