Note 1 | In pursuit of the retreating army of the Prince of Orange, the soldiers of the Duke of Alva got out of control and plundered the city of Malines (2-3 October 1572). To calm the inhabitants of the other cities of the Netherlands the Duke of Alva issued this public statement in which he put the blame of the sack of Malines on the unhappy city. |
Note 2 | A Dutch version was also published: see following no. |
Note 3 | On 5 October 1572, Bertin, secretary to the Duke of Alva, sent a letter to Plantin, dated from Alva's camp at Muizen near Malines, in which he ordered the typographer to print immediately 'les deux escriptz cy joinctz, l'ung en francois et l'altre en theoys [= Dutch]', at about 200 copies, the larger part in Dutch. In margin of this letter Plantin noted 'Ayant receu la lectre à neuf heures au matin, avons l'aprèsdisnée délivré ung pacquet au Sr. Taxis [= head of the Post Office] avec 150 exemplaires en flamand et 100 en françois à ¼ de path. [= patar or stuiver] pièce' (Correspondances de C. Plantin, III, no. 417). |
