Note 1 | Text of the Latin oration held by Philip Marnix van St. Aldegonde, as delegate of Archduke Mathias, at the Diet (Reichstag) at Worms on 7 May 1578: an explanation of the attitude of Archduke Mathias and a request to the German princes to help the Netherlands in their struggle against Spain. |
Note 2 | A French translation was also issued: see following no. The Dutch version was adapted in verses by J.B. Houwaert (see no. cp012654). |
Note 3 | This Latin edition is listed in M 296, folio 13v (Oratio habita Wormaci a legatis). |
Note 4 | N.D. Sille, in a letter dated Antwerp, 8 June 1578, ordered Plantin, on behalf of the Prince of Orange, to print 'la proposition Imperiale ensemble l'harangue du Sr de St Aldegonde faictes en l'assemblée de deputation nagaires tenue à Worms, et d'en bailler quelques exemplaires, etc.' (Corr., V, no. 795). The privilege, also signed by N.D. Sille, has the same date as the letter. |
