Note 1 A letter from Plantin to Buyssetius, 14 March 1579, let it be understood that he was then reprinting Horae in the same formats as the preceding year (in 12mo and in 24mo: see cp012670 and cp010656): 'Horas eadem forma superiori anno impressi eaque jam recudo' (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VI, no. 59). Cf. another letter to Buyssetius, 10 December 1579 (Ibidem, no. 851, page 114), in which the printer affirms to have printed in the last two years 'Officii B. Mariae in 12⁰ ternas impress. Officii B. Mariae in 24⁰ septenas impress.'.
Note 2 Karen Lee Bowen suggests A-Z8, a-d8 as a possible collation (with a-h8 as a collation of a possible accompanying hymnal). This suggested collation is based upon records in Arch. 32 en 33 of quires printed between February and April 1579 for a 12° (or possibly 24°) book of hours and “himni”. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 251)
Note 3 Bowen states that she questions the actual format due to the superimposed notations of 12° and 24° formats in the payment records for the printing of this edition, found in Arch. 32, folio 277 recto and Arch. 33, folio 1 verso. She did not find any clearly related records for the setting of this Officium. Bowen refers to Arch. 32 folios 282 recto and 275 recto respectively for the setting and printing of the possible accompanying hymnal. Finally, she states that at least part of this edition (completed in April 1579) contained engravings. She refers to a payment made to Myncken Liefrinck on 21 May 1579 for the printing of engravings for “cleyn” [small] books of hours (Arch. 18, opening 278 right) in order to substantiate this claim. (Bowen, Books of Hours, 251)
