| Note 1 | Text of Corippus's eulogy of the Byzantine emperor Justinus, written about 567 (pages 15-64), preceded by some fragments: the preserved part of Corippus's foreword (10-12) and his panegyric in honour of Anastasius, quaestor et magister (12-14). First edition. Edited from a manuscript which belonged to him personally, by the Spanish scholar, Michael Ruizius Assagrius, who also provided a number of 'scholia et observationes' (71-93). |
| Note 2 | The dedicatory to Cardinal Albert, Archduke of Austria (the later sovereign of the Southern Netherlands), is dated Madrid, 10 April 1579. It may be assumed that Ruizius prepared his edition in Spain. In the dedicatory he notes that he has been an 'alumnus' and 'domesticus' of the Habsburgs and that once in Germany he wrote an eulogy on the accession to the throne of Albert's father, Emperor Maximilian II, an eulogy which he includes in his manuscript to have it printed or rejected as it would suit Archduke Albert. In fact, the text was retained and printed on pages 65-70 (dated Frankfurt, 25 November 1562). |
| Note 3 | When Corippus was published, Antwerp had joined the rebellion against Philip II and the contacts with Spain were practically severed. Direct transactions between Ruizius and Plantin for publishing Corippus seem all but improbable. But Mathias of Austria, brother of Cardinal Albert, played from 1577 till 1581 the card of the rebellion and resided mostly at Antwerp. It may be taken for granted that he or one of his followers passed Ruizius's text to Plantin and arranged for the publication. |
