| Note 2 | In the dedicatory to the members of the Amsterdam Chamber of Rhetoric De Eglantieren (with the motto In liefd' bloeyende), Coornhert explains that he had made some 30 years ago a translation of Boethius's work. This adaptation from an older Dutch translation had been printed but with so many errors that the text was rendered unrecognizable (probably Die vertroestinghe der Wyssheyt, Deventer, Sim. Steinberghen, 1557; itself an adaptation of the Dutch translation published in 1485, Ghent, A. de Keysere. Cf. BB, I, page 609). Having been urged by some members of De Eglantieren - to which Coornhert belonged - to help in their common effort to purify the Dutch language, he thought of editing again a Dutch version of Boethius, this time translated directly from the Latin text. To avoid his former misadventure and in order to have this time a correctly printed text, he approached first Plantin. Elated by the warm response, he immediately started with his new translation. |
