Note 2 | Of the four Dutch and the two French editions of the Ordonnance sur le faict de la iustice criminelle published by Plantin, one Dutch edition was 'officially' printed by Verwithagen (see no. cp011892). Of the others at least one (in French ?) must have been printed at the order of Plantin (and probably with Plantinian type) by another Antwerp colleague, Hendrik Alsens: on 17 October 1571 was booked to his credit by Plantin the sum of 18 florins Carolus guilders for 7½ sheets of an Edict de criminale, in total 22½ reams (= meaning that 1,500 copies were printed), at 16 stuivers per ream. On 7 March 1571 were added 7 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for 'Ordonnances B.D.H. criminelle 1,500', that is 3 sheets of an Ordonnance criminelle, making 9 reams (and 1,500 copies), at 16 stuivers per ream (Arch. 31, folio 91). |
Note 3 | From 3 until 14 October 1570 Plantin delivered to M. van Hamont 830 copies (318 French, 412 Dutch and 100 unspecified), making, at 2 stuivers per copy, the sum of 82 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers In March and in August 1571 he sent the Brussels bookseller some other copies (Arch. 17, folio 141). |
