Note 1 | Text printed with the same type-composition as the New Testament in the in folio Dutch Bible, published by Plantin in the same year (see no. cp011248): first the text in folio (on two columns) was printed, and then the composition re-arranged for printing the in 8⁰ (on one column). The illustrations in the text are the same as in the in folio edition. The calendar (and the illustrations of the calendar) have been added. |
Note 2 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 95 verso, gives following details: the wages for composing and printing are entered from 7 July till 10 November 1565 and amount to 68 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers (in fact the actual costs for composing had been noted in the cost-accounting note for the Dutch Bible of 1566: see no. 709; the sum of 68 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers refers only to the extra-costs for printing the additional copies of the New Testament and perhaps for re-arranging the type-composition). At 48 sheets per copy, 96 reams of 'papier carillon fin' were used, making, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers per ream, 126 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers This means that 1,000 copies were printed. Plantin adds 'Item une rame carillon gros bon: 43 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers'. This is an error, as a ream of that paper cost only 1 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers What Plantin really meant was that, above the 1,000 copies, another number of copies were printed on this paper: 43 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers is the price of 48 reams of 'carillon gros bon' and with these reams 500 additional copies could be printed. These 500 additional copies were in fact intended for Plantin's Antwerp colleague, Pieter van Keerberghen: in Arch. 3, folio 38 recto, is noted that Plantin sold to Van Keerberghen 48 printed reams (= 500 copies) of the Nouveau Testament flameng, making, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers per ream, 84 florins Carolus guilders Very likely these additional copies received a special title-page with the address of P. van Keerberghen. The only copies we could find of a Dutch New Testament showing Van Keerberghen's address and the date 1566 (Ghent University Library: Th. 2475; Universtiy Library Amsterdam: 1147G8) were, however, certainly not printed by Plantin: another typographer must have printed in 1566 a similar edition for Van Keerberghen. When making the grand total in Arch. 4, folio 95 verso, Plantin made another small mistake: he put down 236 florins Carolus guilders 19 stuivers, instead of 236 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 13 recto (Nieuwe Testam[ent] duysch in 8⁰, A⁰ -, f[euilles] 48, [price:] stuivers 6½). |
