Note 1First part (A-K8: pages [1-160]): 'Index rerum et verborum'; second part (A-F8: pages [161-256]): 'Index omnium legum quae his Pandectarum…libris continentur'.
Note 2With the Index in Museum Plantin-Moretus, A 115 I, is bound a work (pages [1-54]; quires α-γ8, δ4) preceded by the note 'Antonius Contius iuris studiosis' (page [1]), and consisting of the Fasti Consulares (both note and text printed in the width and not in the height of the page) (pages [2-46]), and the 'Chronologia annorum et consulum ac indictionum Imperii Iustiniani' (tables printed in the normal way) (pages [47-54]). It may be considered to form a kind of appendix to the Index but it is not quite clear if it was normally sold together with it (it is lacking in most known copies of the Index) and in any case it doesn't seem to have formed an 'official' part of the Index or of any Other volume of the series (= to judge from the numbers of quires ascribed in the Plantinian catalogues to each volume).
Note 1Edition in 12 volumes of the Corpus iuris civilis. The order followed above is the one given in M 296, folio 20v (Corp[us] Duareni 8⁰, A⁰ 1567: Pr[ima] pars Digestorum 4 priores libri: f[euilles] 18½; 2a pars a libro 5⁰ ad 12 m: f[euilles] 16½; 3a pars a libro 12⁰ usque ad 20: f[euilles] 20; 4a pars Digestorum a lib[ro] 20 usque ad 28: f[euilles] 22½; 5a Digestorum pars a lib. 28 usque ad 37 m: f[euilles] 35; 6a Digestorum pars a lib. 37⁰ usque ad 45 m: f[euilles] 33; 7a Digestorum pars a lib. 45⁰ usque ad finem: f[euilles] 29; Codicis libri V priores: f[euilles] 38; Codicis libri posteriores: f[euilles] 52; Novellae in 8⁰: f[euilles] 31½; Institutiones Juris Civilis: f[euilles] 19¼; Index continet: f[euilles] 16. Summa: f[euilles] 331¼). The same order and number of sheets is given in Arch. 4, folio 100, with one exception: the number of quires for the Institutiones is here reduced from 19¼ to 19 (and, consequently the total from 331¼ to 331). The difference of the ¼ sheet is probably to be attributed to the fact that Plantin forgot to count in Arch. 4 the additional separate sheet with the 'Schemata graduum consanguinitatis'.
Note 2Edited by the French lawyers Ludovicus Russardus (Roussart) and Franciscus Duarenus (Douaren; 1509-1559). The work was started by Duarenus and after his death continued and finished by Russardus.
Note 3Reprint of the edition published in Lyons by Guillaume Rouillé (Roville) in 1561. Rouillé asked Plantin in a letter of 26 December 1565 not to bring this reprint on the market as Rouillé himself had the intention to put on his presses a revised second edition (Corr., I, no. 19: 'L'on m'a dict que vous voulez imprimer mes cours de Roussart in 8⁰, je vous voudroys prier de vous déporter de cella pour la pareille, car vous avez assez d'autres choses à fayre. Plantin's answer is not known, if there was any, but he had already made a deal with a Lyonese competitor of Rouillé on 10 October 1565 for the sale of a large consignment, and had actually started printing on 15 December 1565.
Note 4The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 100, gives the following details about 'Corpus Juris Civilis 8⁰ ad exempl[ar] Russardi'. The Institutiones were printed first, in an edition of 2,550 copies, from 15 December 1565 till 17 March 1566. The wages for composing and printing came to 66 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers; 100 reams of paper 'petit bastard' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 139 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 216 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers 'qui est la pièce' 1½ stuivers The Index was also separately entered but this note is not finished (the printing of ABC is noted on 1 February [1566], of 7 unspecified sheets on 8 June; of another sheet on 22 June. This makes only 11 sheets out of 16. The number and the price of the reams of paper used is also not entered). In fact, Plantin preferred ultimately to put the expenses for printing the Index together with the costs of the other parts in a more brief note, stating that from 9 March till 8 September 1566 313 sheets (meaning the complete work with the Index, but minus the Institutiones) were printed in an edition of 1,600 copies, at a total cost of 955 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers In all 1,032 reams 18 'mains' (including 31 reams 6 'mains' for the 'imperfections', counted at 2 'mains' per printed sheet) were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 1,446 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers Expenses are also noted of 15 florins Carolus guilders for 'L'exemplaire dud[ict] corpus sur quoy est imprimé (= a printed copy of the 1561 Lyons-edition which served as a model for the compositors) et la copie à lire led[ict] livre (probably meaning a printed copy for the use of the proof-readers)', and 5 florins Carolus guilders for 'Les formats pour 5 presses [in all 10] et pour diverses reglettes' (this last entry showing that Plantin had been busy on the project with no less than 5 presses), bringing the overall costs to 2,421 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers Plantin concludes: 'Revient led[ict] livre avec les Institut[iones] à 1 florins Carolus guilders 13 stuivers [a piece]'.
Note 5The cost-accounting note shows clearly that the Institutiones were printed in a larger edition (2,550 copies compared to 1,600 for the other parts), implying that the surplus-number of 950 were to be sold separately. This can explain why of the Institutiones two editions are known, similar but for one detail: whilst one shows 1566 on the title-page, the other has 1567 (like the other parts). One may suppose that the surplus-copies for separate sale got the title-page with the year 1566.
Note 6An important customer was Jehan Mareschal, bookseller at Lyons. On 10 October 1565 Plantin noted the reception of 100 florins Carolus guilders as advance-money for 625 copies of the 'Corpus Juris Civilis Russardi in 8⁰', at 2 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per copy, to be delivered before August 1566 or at the Frankfurt Fairs in September of that year (Arch. 3, folio 37). Mareschal took finally only 461 copies, which, at 2 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per copy, came to 1,106 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers This sum he paid in Lyonese publications (noted on 28 August 1567: Arch. 3, folio 74). A barrel full of 'Cours' was shipped to Frankfurt to be delivered to J. Mareschal, who, however, by mistake took away a barrel with Hebrew Bibles (letter of Plantin to Mareschal [addressed as 'marchant libraire demeurant à Heydelberghe' but clearly the same as the J. Mareschal of Lyons], 21 June 1567: Corr., I, no. 36; cf. also L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, page 434).
Note 7Listed in M 296, folio 9v (Ius Civile Russardi et Duareni 8⁰, A⁰ -, f[euilles] 331¼, [price:] florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers 10) and folio 20v (cf. supra).
