Note 1 Edition of the two books of Alciatus's emblems, the first containing 113 emblems, the second (pages 205-229) 85 emblems. The first book illustrated (there are 112 and not 113 woodcuts as emblem no. 90 has not been illustrated) and commented upon by Sebastian Stockhamerus. The general presentation is: heading of the emblem, woodcut-illustration, Latin poem of Alciatus (in italic type), comment by Stockhamerus (in roman type). The second volume has the poems of Alciatus without illustrations or comments. The illustrations have been copied from an edition of the Lyons printer Jean de Toures (first edition with these woodcuts: 1547). The same typographer was also the first to include in his editions comments on Alciatus's first book by the German humanist Sebastian Stockhamerus (editions of 1556 and 1561: Duplessis, nos. 29 and 30). It may be assumed that Plantin for his 1565-publication pirated an edition of Jean de Tournes printed in 1563 or 1564 (= the foreword by Stockhamerus is dated Coïmbra, 1 March 1563), although copies of such a de Tournes-edition are not known.
Note 2 The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 66 verso, gives following details about 'Emblemata Alciati': the wages for composing and printing are entered from 10 November till 16 December 1564, and amount to 17 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers Of the edition 1,250 copies were printed for which 20 reams (including the 'imperfections') of 'papier carré' were used. In calculating the price of the paper Plantin made a rather large error: at 23 stuivers per ream 'coustent ensemble 23 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers et le commencement 20 stuivers: 34 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers', when in fact the total was only 24 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers The woodcuts were executed by Arnold Nicolai and Gerard Janssen van Kampen; who made the 'pourtraicture' (= drawings) is not specified. The entries regarding the illustrations are not too explicit. On 19 April 1564 20 florins Carolus guilders 2½ stuivers were paid 'pour 44 figures taillees et 113 bois [= the prepared wood-blocks, most likely showing the drawings]' to unknown craftsmen; on 7 May 1564 Arnold Nicolai received 3 florins Carolus guilders 11 stuivers for cutting 11 blocks, and on 13 June 1564 are entered 7 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers 'pour 7 figures par Arnold [Nicolai] et un certain nombre par Guerard [Janssen] van Kampen'; finally are noted 'pour encores 47 fig. taillées à 8 stuivers pièce: 18 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers', next to which is scribbled the date of 26 April [1564]. It seems, consequently, that 113 blocks were effectively prepared, but that Plantin ultimately received only 112 cut wood-blocks.
Note 3 Not listed in M 164 and M 296.
