Note 1 | M 296, folio 5r, lists 'Divine Philosophie de Vives, a⁰ 1577, [price:] stuivers ¾, f[euilles] 7'. This entry is repeated in M 296, folio 15r (Philosophie de Vives…), and in M 164, folio 10r. No copy known. |
Note 2 | French translation from Vives's Ad veram sapientiam introductio (first edition of the Latin text: Basel, 1539; cf. Palau y Dulcet, 27, page 405). First French edition, with the title Introduction à vraye sapience, at Paris, Charles l'Angelier, 1548. An edition with the title Traité du vrai amour de sagesse divine, introduction à la sagesse, traduict du latin [par Guillaume Paradin], Lyons, Maurice Roy et Loys Pesnot, 1550. Followed by a series with the title Divine Philosophie de Vives, traduicte en vulgaire françoys par maistre Guillaume Paradin: Paris, Jehan Ruelle (imprimé par Jehan Amazeur), 1552; Antwerp, imprimé par Jehan Loë, pour Jehan Monsieur et Laurent L'Enfant, libraires à Mons, Haynault, 1553; Paris, imprimé par Jehan Ruelle, 1553 (cf. Palau y Dulcet, 27, page 409). Plantin's publication is very likely a reprint of one of the editions showing the title Divine Philosophie. |
Note 3 | The sales of a number of copies are noted in Plantin's ledgers for 1557: Arch. 38, folios 5v (to Martin Nutius, 5 August: 2 copies, worth 1½ stuivers), 28v (to Jacques Boschart, Malines, 4 August: 6 copies, worth 4½ stuivers), 18v (to Richard Destries, 5 September: 6 copies), 30v (to Vincent de la Vacquerie, 10 November: 4 copies). Other sales are mentioned in 1558 (Arch. 34, pages 19, 22 [100 copies for the Frankfurt Fair, 11 March], 37 [1558 ?; 100 copies 'pour envoyer' either at Paris or Frankfurt]; Arch. 38, folio 54v) and 1559 (Arch. 34, page 29 [50 copies to Martin le Jeune at Paris]). |
