Note 1 | Edition primarily intended for the market in the Netherlands. |
Note 2 | The breviary was partially printed by Hendrik Alsens (cf. under cp010934). Plantin noted on 27 October 1571 the delivery by Alsens of 17 sheets (H-Z, Zz) of a non-specified breviary (Arch. 31, folio 100 recto). When on 24 February 1572 he registered the delivery by Alsens of 26 other sheets (A-Z, Zz, BB-DD), he specified this time that they belonged to an in 8⁰ breviary and made it at the same time clear that the 17 sheets noted on 27 October 1571 belonged to the same edition ('Item encores paravant 17 feilles font ensemble feilles 43') (Arch. 31, folio 102 recto). These 43 sheets made, at 5 reams per sheet (= meaning that 2,500 copies were printed), 215 reams. Plantin had to pay for them, at 2 florins Carolus guilders per ream, the sum of 430 florins Carolus guilders |
Note 3 | The edition consisted in fact not of 43 but of 64 sheets. Two other Antwerp typographers, Diederik van der Linden and Jan Verwithagen, were busy printing breviaries for Plantin in 1571 (Rooses, M. Musée Plantin-Moretus, page 100): it may be assumed that they supplied the remaining 21 sheets. |
Note 4 | Not listed in M 164 and M 296. |
