Note 1Alphabetical list of Latin words (in roman type), with eventually the Greek translation, and the translation or explanation in French (in italic type) and Dutch (in gothic type); about 20,000 entries.
Note 2In the foreword Plantin explains that he issued this publication at the urging of some schoolmasters, and that the work of collecting the Latin words and putting them into alphabetical order had been done partly by him and partly by some learned men, whilst an expert in the matter made the French and Dutch interpretations ('Obsecratus autem postea ab aliquot Ludimagistris, ut idem in Grammaticis studiis Latinae linguae rudimentis praestarem, eorum aequae petitioni lubentissime obsequutus sum. Voces itaque omnes Latinas ex Linguae Latinae Thesauris, partim nostra, partim doctorum aliquot virorum diligentia collectas, & alphabetico ordine dispositas, Viro cuidam exercitato recolligendas, castigandas, & duabus Linguis Gallica videlicet & Teutonica [quam fere & re, & nomine Flandricam fecit usus] interpretandas exhibuimus: ut totius Galliae Belgicae pubes commune habeat vernaculo idiomate Dictionarium.'). The 'vir exercitatus' who made the French and Dutch translations and/or interpretations may be identified with Comelis Kiliaan (cf. Thesaurus Theutonicae linguae: no. 2310).
Note 3As detailed by F. Claes: the principal source of the Dictionarium tetraglotton was the dictionary in three languages (Latin, Greek, French) of the French humanist Guillaume Morel, Verborum Latinorum cum Graecis Gallicisque coniunctorum commentarii, Paris, 1558. Morel himself took the larger part of the Latin words and their French interpretation from two dictionaries published (and often reprinted) by Robert Estienne: the Dictionarium Latinogallicum and the Dictionarium puerorum Latinogallicum. The Greek translations and/or interpretations were partly the work of Morel, partly taken from the Dictionarium of Calepinus. The Dutch translations in the Tetraglotton follow in general the French texts of Morel. In a relatively minor number of cases (according to Claes's calculations some 7%) the Dutch interpretations were made from older Dutch or German dictionaries. These secondary sources include certainly the Latin-Dutch dictionaries of Dasypodius-Schorus and Servilius and the Latin-German Dictionarium puerorum of Frisius. The Calepinus pentaglottos, a shortened edition in five languages of the great Calepinus, published at Antwerp, 1545, was possibly also used. This means that the work of the 'vir exercitatus' consisted mainly in providing the Dutch translations and/or interpretations, and that, notwithstanding Plantin's affirmation, he had less to do with the French part of the text.
Note 4According to the colophon the printing was finished on 2 January 1562. Four copies were, however, already delivered to the Birckman firm at Antwerp on 16 December 1561 (Arch. 36, folio 17r).
Note 5Plantin took the initiative and printed the work, but some of his colleagues ordered large numbers of the copies and had their own address printed on the title-page of these copies (Guilielmus Silvius and Joannes Steelsius at Antwerp; Joannes Bogardus at Louvain), whilst on the copies taken by A. Birckman of Antwerp figures the address of both firms.
Note 6Listed in M 296, folio 4v (Dictionarium tetraglotton, 4⁰, 1562, f[euilles] 83, [price:] stuivers 12), and M 164, folio 8v.
