Note 1Fifth edition of the complete works of Horatius printed by Plantin. These Opera include: Odarum seu carminum libri IIII (pages 1-248), Epodon liber (pages 249-302), Satyrarum libri II (pages 303-507), Epistolarum libri II pages 508-615), De arte poetica (pages 616-646). As in the previous editions by Cruquius of the Epodon liber (1567) and the Satyrarum libri II (1573), each poem (printed in italic type) is followed by scholia (in roman type), introduced by the word 'Commentator', and by comments and notes of the editor (in roman type), introduced by the word 'Cruquius'. Of the parts of Horatius's Opera which Cruquius edited before, text and scholia ('Commentator') have been reprinted without much changes, but the comments ('Cruquius') have in many cases been rewritten wholly or partially.
Note 2In the foreword to the reader (pages 647-648) Cruquius gave some interesting details on his methods and the manuscripts he used. On these manuscripts cf. the note in cp011622.
Note 3The Horatii vita (pages [649-653]) include: Q. Horatii Flacci vita e vetusto codice Bland. descripta (page [649]), Eiusdem Horatii vita in eodem codice aliter descripta (pages [649-650]), Eiusdem vita in trib. codic. Bland. aliter descripta (pages [650-653]), Odarum tituli Graeci (page [653]).
Note 4In the dedicatory to the magistrate of Bruges Cruquius digresses on the early history of the city and the surrounding part of the County of Flanders. The grateful magistrate of Bruges made him a gift of 50 florins Carolus guilders and doubled the annual wardrobe-fee to which he was entitled (amounting to 2 Flemish pounds [12 florins Carolus guilders] a year) (cf. Bib. Belgica (1964–1970 éd.) , III, pages 498-499).
Note 5In the dedicatory to N. a Briarde an early (13th century) seal of the city of Bruges is commented upon. It had been sent from Ghent to Bruges by Aegidius Witsius, councillor in the Council of Flanders. Of the reproduction on page [15] Cruquius specifies that the drawing was made by the Bruges engraver and bookseller, Hubertus Goltzius, and that Plantin had the woodcut executed.
Note 6According to the colophon the printing was finished on 10 October 1575.
Note 7Listed in M 296, folio 8 verso (Horatius cum cto. Jacobi Cruquii, 4º, 1578, f[euilles] 86, [price:] stuivers 25).
