Note 1 | First edition of Meurier's conversation manual: a) Series of 'colloques' in French with Flemish (Dutch) translation (pages [6-104]), b) Introduced by the note 'Considéré, Amy Lecteur, que tu as nostre Dictionnaire François-Flamen, par lequel te peux aider, et quasi apprendre, toy mesme, à nager en la traduction des motz François en Flamen, nous t'avons, de fait propensé, delaissé ledict Flamen en ce que s'ensuit', some French 'colloques' and French poems (pages [104-126]). |
Note 2 | Analysed by M. Sabbe, Peeter Heyns en de nimfen uit den Lauwerboom, c. 1930 (Publications of the 'Vereeniging der Antwerpsche Bibliophilen', no. 41), pages 79-84 (following the 1558-edition, which, however, is identical to the one of 1557). |
Note 3 | Text of 'Au lecteur' (page [127]) reproduced in Sabbe, 'De eerste uitgave…', page 110. |
Note 4 | The printing seems to have already been finished at the end of 1556, as on 10 September of that year were delivered to Jan Steelsius 6 'colloques francoys flameng', worth 15 stuivers (Arch. 34, page 2) - but the possibility cannot be excluded that this refers to another, similar publication, or that the date 10 September 1556 should in fact be read 10 September 1557. Other sales by Plantin included: 4 'Colloques Meurier', worth 10 stuivers, to Steelsius on 8 October 1557 (Ibidem, page 2); 2 copies, worth 5 stuivers, to Martin Nutius on 5 August 1557 (Ibidem, page 5); 6 copies shipped to Arnould Langelier in Paris on 18 June 1557 (Arch. 34, page 17) |
Note 5 | The work was probably commissioned by Meurier and the larger part of the edition delivered to the author, but for some reason 100 'Colloques', at 2½ stuivers a piece, worth 12 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, were, together with an equal number of 'Vocabulaires' and 'Grammaires', returned to the printer on 2 July [1557] 'le tout à payer [par Plantin] en livres…' (Arch. 38, folio 81 recto) (cf. also cp013300 and cp011773). |
Note 6 | Not listed in M 296 or M 164. |
