Note 1 | Bib. catholica Neerlandica impressa, no. 3084 (quoting Streicher, but without noting the location of a copy), lists: Petrus Canisius S.J., Institutiones christianae pietatis. Antw., Plantijn, 1567. De Backer-Sommervogel [S.J.], II, Column 636 (without giving either the location of a copy) details: 'Institvtiones Christianæ pietatis. Sev Parvvs Catechismvs Catholicorvm. Auctore D. Petro Canisio, Societatis Iesv Theologo. Accessere Preces Horariæ de æterna Dei sapientia, Iesv Christo Domino nostro, cum piis quibusdam et Christianis exercitationibus. Antverpiae. Excudebat sibi et Materno Cholino ciui Coloniensi Christoph. Plantinus, M.D.LXVII, 16⁰, pages 51, et ff. 7 nch.'. |
Note 2 | Very likely, as he did with the 1566 Summa doctrinae christianae-publication (no. cp012574), Plantin printed part of the edition with a title-page bearing his Antwerp imprint, another part with a title-page naming also Maternus Cholinus, Cologne, as co-publisher. |
Note 3 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, opening 107 left, gives following details about 'Parvus catechismus Canisii cum p[re]cibus horariis et Kalend.': the wages for composing and printing the quires *, A-G, were entered on 3 May 1567 for 16 florins Carolus guilders 1 stuivers (including 'et le format'). Each copy contained 4 sheets (in 16mo: 132 pages). As 2,500 copies were printed, 21 reams (including an unspecified amount for the 'imperfections') of paper 'grand carré' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers per ream, came to 33 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 49 florins Carolus guilders 13 stuivers 'qui est environ 3/8 [stuivers] ascavoir une demye blanche [la pièce]'. |
Note 4 | On 31 May 1567 Plantin mailed to de Cayas a number of 'livrets…par moy imprimés nouvellement', including 'un petit catéchisme avec le calendrier et precibus horariis' (Correspondance de C. Plantin, I, no. 32). |
